I Didn’t Buy a Condominium…
I Bought My Freedom.
There was a moment—not all at once, but slowly—when I realized I wasn’t shopping for a condominium anymore.
I was shopping for the rest of my life.
That’s a very different purchase.
For years, like many OFWs and expats, I believed success looked a certain way.
Work harder.
Save more.
Buy the house.
Pay off the mortgage.
Repeat.
Then one day I asked myself a question that stopped me cold.
When exactly was I supposed to start enjoying everything I’d spent a lifetime building?
Not next year.
Not after one more promotion.
Not after the market improves.
Not “someday.”
Now.
The Biggest Retirement Mistake Isn’t Financial.
It’s Waiting Too Long.
I’ve met people with seven-figure retirement accounts who are terrified to retire.
I’ve met others with modest pensions who wake up every morning smiling.
The difference isn’t always money.
It’s clarity.
The happiest retirees I’ve met all have one thing in common.
They know what they’re retiring to.
Not just what they’re retiring from.
America Taught Me How to Build a Career.
The Philippines Reminded Me How to Build a Life.
For decades, I built a wonderful life in California.
I wouldn’t change it.
But somewhere between work, traffic, deadlines, rising costs, and another increase in my insurance bill…
I realized something.
Life had quietly become expensive.
Not just financially.
Emotionally.
I wasn’t looking for a cheaper life.
I was looking for a richer one.
Then I Started Looking at the Philippines Differently.
Not as the country I left.
As the country I might return to.
Suddenly I wasn’t asking,
“How much does the condominium cost?”
I was asking,
“How do I want to wake up every morning?”
Do I want coffee overlooking a skyline?
Or pine trees?
Can I walk to dinner?
Will healthcare be nearby?
Can friends visit easily?
Can my dogs enjoy retirement as much as I do?
Funny enough…
Those questions led me to the right properties.
Not the other way around.
Stop Buying Square Footage.
Start Buying Tuesdays.
Nobody dreams about quartz countertops.
People dream about Tuesday mornings.
Walking to breakfast.
Reading the paper on the balcony.
Having nowhere to be.
Meeting friends for lunch.
Watching grandchildren swim.
Taking afternoon naps without guilt.
Real estate isn’t really about property.
It’s about Tuesday.
Here’s Something Nobody Told Me…
Buying in the Philippines isn’t nearly as overwhelming as I imagined.
Yes…
There are different developers.
Different locations.
Different payment terms.
Different rules.
But once you surround yourself with good people…
The process becomes much less intimidating.
And that’s probably the biggest lesson I learned.
Don’t just find a property.
Find people you trust.
The Best Investment?
It Might Be the One That Gives You Your Life Back.
Of course appreciation matters.
Of course location matters.
Of course return on investment matters.
But eventually every investment asks one final question.
Did it improve your life?
Because if it didn’t…
Was it really the best investment?
Thinking About Buying Property in the Philippines?
I understand exactly where you are.
Because not long ago…
I was asking the same questions.
Over the past several years, I’ve personally purchased two condominium homes in the Philippines while planning my own retirement.
Along the way, I’ve built relationships with trusted developers, experienced professionals, and licensed real estate brokers who helped make that journey possible.
While I’m not a licensed real estate broker in the Philippines, I’d be happy to share my personal experience, answer questions from a buyer’s perspective, and introduce you to reputable developers and licensed brokers who can help you confidently explore your options.
Whether you’re an OFW planning your return home, an expat considering a new chapter, or an investor looking toward the future…
Let’s start the conversation.
Because sometimes the biggest investment you’ll ever make…
Isn’t in real estate.
It’s in the life you’re creating.
